How Osteopathy Began

“An osteopath reasons from their knowledge of anatomy. They compare the work of the abnormal body with the work of the normal body.”

Andrew Taylor Still, Founder of Osteopathic Medicine

Though each osteopathic physician is unique, a typical office visit for a patient of any age consists of the following:

  • A medically-based history
  • A holistic hands-on examination and working diagnosis
  • Treatment based on diagnosis

Osteopathic care is complementary, meaning it works well alongside other forms of treatment without disrupting existing treatment plans. It pairs particularly well alongside lactation consultancy, midwifery, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation for high performance athletes with long-term, chronic or acute injury.

How I can Help:

An osteopath is interested in how a person responds to:

  • Birth
  • Injuries
  • Inflammatory disease processes
  • Surgeries and residual scar tissue
  • Dental procedures
  • Stress

Treatment is typically very gentle. Tissues are supported and allowed to change.

According to the founder of the Cranial Approach to Osteopathy, Doctor Sutherland, within each patient there is great wisdom, “an inner physician”, a wise all-knowing force that is the source of all healing.

It is an osteopath’s role using their hands to listen, learn, support and allow physiological function within the patient to express its own unerring changes towards health and ease.

My Services

Pregnancy – During and After

Osteopathic treatment can be beneficial in:

  • Easing some of the physical discomforts of pregnancy
  • In some cases, helping a threatened miscarriage to settle
  • Preparing for the demands of the birthing process
  • Helping the mother recover after birth

Baby

The baby can suffer long-lasting effects from the moulding process during birth – an osteopathic checkup is recommended.

Children

Osteopathic treatment using the cranial approach is very gentle, safe and effective for children of all ages, especially when the therapeutic effects reflect the practitioner’s precision and experience.

Why Osteopathy for Babies & Children?

In my experience, it is never too early to treat. For over three decades, in the UK, USA, and NZ, I have worked with patients of every age. Building an understanding of how helpful osteopathy can be for babies and children, has been  a joy and a privilege.

From when the baby is born:

  • Supporting the bonding between mother and baby
  • Easing her discomfort after birth
  • Enabling feeding, calming digestion, and improving sleep

And as the child grows:

  • Helping towards recurrent infections
  • Ear infections
  • Sinus issues
  • Headaches
  • Anxiety
  • Growing pains
  • Improving the quality of rehabilitation after physical injury

Osteopathic treatment may also be helpful in improving behavioural issues and learning difficulties.

My Story

I was born in West Africa, educated in Dunedin and spent my early working life in broadcasting in New Zealand and overseas.

My training as an Osteopath was in London at the British School of Osteopathy, and my years of postgraduate study focused upon approaches that were related to the delicate systems of pregnant women, newborns and children.

I have always thought of an osteopathic family practice as a service to the community. When I moved to the Deep South, encouraged by the Lead Maternity Carer who founded the Birthing Unit in Alexandra, it was a natural choice of mine to volunteer postpartum osteopathic care at the unit.

Over the years, my commitment to Osteopathy has taken me into teaching both in New Zealand and America. Also into writing, where I have co-authored contributions to British and German textbooks on Cranial Osteopathy.

Testimonials

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Thank you, Evelyn

“Our son was born after years of fertility treatment. Evelyn is one of 3 amazing women that I thank to the bottom of my heart for helping bring him into the world, healthy and safe. She is a miracle worker who completely converted my previously skeptical self to the power of osteopathy, and in particular her incredible gift for cranial osteopathy. She was just wonderful treating our son in the weeks after birth. I’ll always be grateful to her.”

Cheryl A.

“Evelyn has worked with many babies in my practice to reduce the strains and molding in these babies following their births using her skill as a cranial osteopath. Babies who receive osteopathic treatment following a long labour, breech presentation, caesarean, tongue tie and reflux babies now have the ability to latch and feed efficiently.”

Patient & Senior Independent Midwife, Wellington

“As a midwife, I have found sending clients to Evelyn Skinner has been a great relief for women and has supported my rates of normal births. Evelyn whilst appearing to touch lightly has extraordinary diagnostic and treatment skills. I have encouraged clients to see her in pregnancy with problems such as difficulty with walking, back pain, a past history of a difficult birth(s) or of any accidents involving the pelvis or neck.”
